Bicycling Safety on Country Roads
July 10 2008
Kyles Ford road is a beautiful scenic ride for bikers but country roads can be as dangerous as busy city roads if you allow yourself to be lulled into a false sense of security. Guard yourself against trouble with the following:
• Always wear a helmet.
• Keep both hands ready to brake.
• Use hand signals.
• Watch for road hazards such as potholes, railroad tracks, gravel, sand, and debris.
• Maintain your bike in good condition by checking brakes and tires regularly.
• Follow the rules of the road. Obey all traffic signs and signals.
• Never pass on the right.
• Wear brightly colored clothing. This will help you to be more visible to motorists.
• Leave the headphones off while riding to increase awareness of potential safety threats.
• Make eye contact with drivers to be certain they are aware of you.
• Dress in layers to adjust to temperature changes.
• Use lights at night. Use a white headlight in front and a rear reflector or taillight in back.
